Gwdihŵ, the tavern on the canal

This location is based on a real place. The Gwdihŵ was my favourite music venue in Cardiff. I played there many times in bands and its front facade was/is glorious.

Sadly, the local council failed to save the building and it was demolished, presumably for more flats. It has since sat as a pile of rubble for four years, unused and wasted.

The Gwdihŵ will live on in the setting of Gwerddonau Llion, however. If you were lucky enough to visit it in real life, then imagine it exactly as it was when you visit in game.

This is an entry for #dungeon23. I am filling out a single room or detail every day. The Gwdihŵ is intended as a nearby starting location and area of interest for those about to enter the GLS Anghymodlon, a 12-deck steampunk airship bound for a doomed international flight. These rooms and details are whatever I can manage in a single day

Gwdihŵ

Description

The Gwdihw is a live music venue and tavern in Caer Isel. It sits along the Canal leading into Caer Isel Bay where the GLS Anghymodlon is currently moored. The exterior of the tavern is painted fantastically, in a striking array of colours. Players may be drawn in by the sound of music from within, where the tavern is always packed with people. Especially on weekends.

The tavern itself long predates the city’s Steam Era but has adopted some of the features of the time, such as brass and copper fittings, gears and clockwork architecture. Along the walls are the prized instruments of famous bands from all over Gwerddonau Llion and the shirts of rugby and football stars from the local area.

There isn’t a lot of seating available inside the Gwdihw. If people want to sit, there is a heated beer garden in the back with a lovely view of the bay. A salty sea breeze and rushing of waves adds to the atmosphere. The front of the building is a low, intimate stage. To the back of the room there is a bar. The rest of the space is for standing as bands play into the night.

The music is often a mix of traditional tunes from Gwerddonau Llion and Caer Isel, and some modern songs with a baroque twist fitting to the current Steam Era. Musicians arrive with accordions, banjos, fiddles and violins.

Ales and ciders from the local area are on tap.
